When I was a middle school band director, I would take my students to high school football games so they could start to understand the high school band experience. When my students and I arrived at our first West Mesa High School Mustang football game, I was immediately stricken with the melody of their school fight song. It is one of the most lyrical I have ever heard. Variations of the melody buzzed around in my head for years after that first game and eventually I began to write them down. Although the melodies in "Mustang March" are distinctly different from the one I heard that night, it would be wrong to say I was not inspired by it. My mission for writing this piece is to embody the rich history of wind band marches while affirming a sense of school spirit and community pride for any ensemble choosing to perform it.
