In music theory, the term “color tone” is used to describe a note that does not fit within traditional chord structure. Instead, it acts on its own, giving the sound a characteristic “color” that would otherwise not be present. A Watercolor Lullaby was written with the idea of using a few, very intentional, very obvious color tones which can help audiences and students identify the importance of these non-chord tones.
